Dayboro Dawn-Chorus

This Sunday morning I awoke early and decided to ‘create’ some ‘soundscapes’ of the dawn-chorus at Morris St, Dayboro, SE Queensland, there was little human-interference and surprisingly few dogs barking. I made the first using a Zoom F1 recorder and XYH-6 Microphone capsule (Two Matched Unidirectional Microphones)  Currently the figtree in the backyard is heavy with fruit and several exotic-shrubs are heavy with blossom, making the area a magnet for ‘frugivores’ such as Barred Cuckooshrike and Australasian Figbirds and nectar-eaters like Little Wattlebirds and Lewin’s Honeyeaters. Unfortunately due to size-constraints I’ve only ‘uploaded’ converted (and slightly-edited) mp3 file-formats.

As I was trying to test various microphones I also made another ‘soundscape’ with the same recorder (Zoom F1) and an SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone but was a little disappointed with the ‘clarity’ obtained. Barred Cuckooshrikes can be heard, and several male Leaden Flycatchers were competing.

Recently, I discovered some interesting new free music-software called “Sonic Visualiser” and wondered if it could be a useful-tool in the bioacoustic field. I haven’t really had time to ‘play’ with it but will pursue it further in the future.

Please listen to the soundscapes and let me know what species you can hear. I’ve found around 30 so far.

Beautiful sounds! Love this. There are a heck of a lot of birds in that dawn chorus. Wonderful!! I love the crazy little Wattebird calls. Magic stuff Tom, I could listen to this all day long. LOL. How many figbirds do you think there were? The figbirds sure have the loudest voices. Which bird is the highpitched sudden alarm caller about 4.36? And I always love the crows.

      Denise, I thinks that’s a ‘Pewee’ (Magpie-Lark)
