  • Spinifex Pigeon?

Here is another mystery, recorded in Sturt NP, NSW 07.30am 29 June 2012. The sound that I’m unable to identify is a soft “a-woo” repeated on the section on several occasions but particularly after the Little Crow’s 3-note outburst. All I can find on the available references are Spinifex Pigeon (which I’ve observed but not heard)

If you have difficulty playing this file I’ve also put it on the Xeno-Canto forum where there is a map to show the location.

    All constructive comments welcome…..

(Thanks to all those that answered my request, looks like I should have known this one, have heard a lot of them over the years but didn’t recognize the call on the segment, Crested Pigeon it is (hangs head in shame……)

  • Mystery call from western NSW

Wonder if someone can confirm the identity of the bird calling on this audio. It was ‘tagged’ on a static-sensor in Sturt NP, NSW in June 2012.

I believe that it could be a Mulga Parrot (Psephotus varius) but I’m not 100%

I’ve placed the call on the ‘Mysteries’ Forum on Xeno-Canto

I’ve also got quite a few Pomatostomus babbler calls but as the recording quality is rather poor I will wait until I get some better ones before uploading these.

    Look forward to your comments

Note: Since this posting I’ve had a few suggestions and most point out that this is actually a Bourkes Parrot (Neopsephotus bourkii)…..I’m not sure why I didn’t think of it! Tom

  • Black-throated Finch (Poephila cincta)

Recently I was asked to check through audio captured from acoustic-sensors placed at the Bimblebox Reserve in the Galilee Basin of Central Queensland to verify the existence of the Black-throated Finch (Poephila cincta). Unfortunately I haven’t any experience of the species in the wild but after listening to hundreds of probable Double-barred Finch calls I’m  hoping that I can draw on the experience of others to confirm that this segment is actually P. cincta. The call below was captured on 21 April 2012 at 08:32 am

Since posting the first calls I have also found another two (#2 & #3) which were recorded on the following day at approximately 09:15, Double-barred Finch, Weebill. Striated Pardalote and Spotted Bowerbird also present.

Note: it appears that the ‘peep-peep’ calls on #2 & #3 are Plum-headed Finches (thanks Eric!) and the calls on #1 are probably just Double-barred Finch….back to the ‘drawing-board 😥

Please let me know your views,  especially if you are familiar with the species.

Note: If this species is confirmed to be present on Bimblebox it could have far-reaching consequences, so it might prove be useful to contact me directly and not publicly at this stage.
